Cotton is only grown in in subtropical countries with warm and humid weather and today the Organic Cotton we use to make our products comes from India and Turkey.
Before we started Gossypium in 1998 we spent 2 years living in India working alongside cotton farmers in the State of Gujarat to help them convert to organic farming methods.
Check out this short film made 8 years ago, it describes how organic is grown in India.
The conversion process take up to 5 years and during this period farmers have to work hard to rebuild the fertility of their soil and the biodiversity of their entire farm without relying on synthetic chemicals.
Conventional farming relies on subsidizing those natural elements and replacing them with manmade chemicals. While those are efficient when first used, in the long terms the soil fertility will be reduced and pest and disease have proven to adapt.
Organic Farming relies on intelligent farming with a healthy soil and the use of all natural tools available. Beneficiary insect and birds are welcome as the help farmers protect their crop against pest that would otherwise eat and damage the cotton.
As a consumer there is a wide range of qualities of Organic Cotton available to buy nowadays from carrier bags to fine shirting.
The one we select for our products is a medium to long staple cotton that is softer and stronger than conventional cotton; it is perfect for the kind of products we manufacture.
All the Cotton and Fabric we use is GOTS certified.
