The True Cost of fast fashion...and why we're the antidote

Written by Lucy Cunningham on July 26 2018

“Ethical fashion” used to be the proviso of a very small minority of the population. After all, it’s easy enough to forget where clothing comes from when faced with a glittering array of brand new fashion at thrillingly cheap prices. Plus the ethical fashion on offer was often limited too, making it harder for it to compete with the fashion giants.

Fast forward to the 21st century and we’re becoming increasingly aware of the impact of fast fashion. Whilst the fashion giants are still churning out cheap clothing at the cost of its workers and the environment, social media means we’re able to call them out on it. Initiatives such as Fashion Revolution’s #WhoMadeMyClothes urge consumers to find out the story behind their fashion.

Fashion Revolution

Launched in 2015, the film The True Cost drew attention to the massive impact of fast fashion on both human and environmental life with some shocking footage and facts (thank you to www.1millionwomen.com.au for this concise 5):

  1. The fashion industry is the world's second-largest polluter
  1. The world now consumes a staggering 80 billion pieces of clothing each year
  1. One-in-six people work in the global fashion industry, the majority earning less than $3 per day
  1. 250,000 Indian cotton farmers have killed themselves in the last 15 years after going into debt buying GM cotton seeds
  1. Only 10% of the clothes people donate to charity get sold - the rest end up in landfills or flooding markets in developing countries like Haiti where they kill local industry.

For us here at Gossypium, caring for people and the planet is in our DNA. We started life as an ethical company twenty years ago, and we continue to work for a better future. We want to be the antidote to the sharks of the fashion world, and provide a beautiful, sustainable alternative. Yogawear and activewear is on the rise, and a vast proportion of it is made in sweatshops from fabrics which pollute the environment (we’ve written a bit about that on the blog here and here).

So we decided to be different. We decided to be the dolphin amongst the sharks.

Our aim is to create clothing that feels great against the skin, fits perfectly, and lasts many years. We use the finest ethical fabrics (you can read a bit more about our unique ethical fabrics here) to make clothing that lasts.

We make sure each of our garments is tested by real yoga teachers and sports practitioners. Using their insight we design extras such as our reinforced gussets (no more worrying when doing the splits!) and our super comfy fold-over waistbands.

What makes us truly unique, however, is that we make EACH AND EVERY garment by hand here in our UK workshop. That means that when you place an order, we hand cut the fabric to your specifications (want a longer leg in your trousers? No problem!) and sew, press and pack them right here in our workshop on the south coast. We’re a small team and we pay our workers the Living Wage. When you order with us you can rest assured that there are NO SWEATSHOPS involved!

Here's a video we made to show you just how your Gossypium clothing is made:

We take the time to understand our customers and their needs. We want you to love your Gossypium clothes for many years to come. But most of all, we want you to be able to choose clothing with happiness in your heart, knowing that you’re doing your bit for the planet whilst getting gorgeous, ethical fashion made just for you.
